A Day in the life of an Investment Counselor.

(Financial Advisor Alternative)

As an Investment Counselor, you are the voice of Fisher Investments to our clients. You will partner with our internal portfolio decision-makers, research teams, and client service associates to give our clients the best service possible. With our commitment to being a fee-only fiduciary firm, you'll appreciate knowing our compensation structure helps align our interests with our clients’. Through our unique training programs, Fisher Investments offers an elevated finance and capital markets education to understand our firm's unique approach. You will report to a Team Leader, whose previous experience in the role will assist you in navigating client relationships and provide personalized career development.

Your Day to Day

Investment Counselors spend roughly 70% of their day engaging with clients. These conversations mainly take place over the phone and cover topics like the stock market, the economy, current events and how these factors could affect the client’s portfolio. As an Investment Counselor you will also have an annual conversation with your clients to discuss their goals, time horizons, and cash flow needs. You then share this information with our portfolio teams, and they create a personalized asset allocation for your client. You will be responsible for communicating the portfolio strategy to your clients, and answering any questions they have.

About 20% of your day will be spent on more operational focused tasks, working with internal business teams, and quarterbacking any operational tasks that may need to happen for your client. The final 10% of your day is dedicated to team meetings, personal organization, and setting yourself up for success in your day.

Be at the heart of our Private Client Group

  • As an Investment Counselor, you focus on service, not sales. You are responsible for knowing your clients, understanding their goals, and advising them through market ups and downs.
  • Build trusting relationships with our clients and educate them on our top-down portfolio strategy, their investments, and important market events.
  • Proactively connect with clients to review their asset allocation and ensure we're on the right track towards their long-term financial goals.
  • Clients are provided to you, so you don’t have to prospect—allowing you to build authentic relationships based on trust and expertise. Your roster of high net worth clients will be gradually built within the first year.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming an Investment Counselor at Fisher?

"To be successful in this role, you need to have an interest in capital markets. You are the liaison between our Investment Policy Committee and our clients, and you must be able to convey our message with confidence. Active listening is always going to be crucial. You need to know your client’s goals—for example, if their grandson is graduating soon, and paying for his college is what’s important, that’s something you need to have top of mind."
