School entry will vary by some of the following factors including, gender, passing an entry exam, location, or religion. There is a variety of state-sponsored and private schools. If schools are an important factor in your decision, it's best to understand the UK system and also know what's near/around your new home. The term "primary school" generally refers to ages 5-10 (depending on birthday). "Secondary school" refers to ages 11-18 (again, depending on birthday). Similar to the US, there are both public and private schools in the UK. However, "public" schooling in the UK is the US version of private education (meaning you pay for it). State-sponsored schools are the government funded, e.g. free.
