How to Approach Your New Role With the Right Mindset
Authors: Fisher Careers
Date: July 22, 2026
Whether you’re coming from another company or moving within Fisher Investments, starting a new role can inspire both excitement and uncertainty. Between meeting new teammates, settling into the environment, and learning the ropes of your new job, there are a multitude of changes happening at once.
Regardless of your field or experience level, new job jitters are normal, and there are ways they can be managed. Below are some tips to keep in mind as you start your new role!
Keep an open mind.
You don’t know what you don’t know. While you may have an idea of what your new role will entail, there will likely be aspects of the role that you won’t discover until you start. Listening and learning, rather than making assumptions, is key. You’ll spend your first few weeks, maybe even months, piecing together the scope of your role in the context of your team and the larger firm. Keep your mind open to new information and new ways of doing things, and most importantly, be prepared for feedback.
To help with your learning journey, Fisher offers a wide range of online courses covering topics such as team overviews, project management, or even trainings for specific software you may use in your job. Once you get past the onboarding phase, you may find that your role has a broader application than previously thought, leading to the development of new skills and responsibilities you enjoy!
Embrace discomfort.
Discomfort doesn’t have to be a negative feeling—in many cases, it means you’re growing. Maybe you were in your last role for several years, and you’re used to being the expert. Or maybe the corporate world is new to you, and you’re still getting accustomed to the rhythm and environment. At Fisher, we encourage employees to break down their learning using the 70-20-10 framework: 70% of learning is on the job, 20% comes from coaching and feedback, and 10% is through formal training, such as in our Learning Center. We believe the biggest catalyst for development is practice and repetition, even if it is uncomfortable at first. That fish-out-of-water feeling can be foreign and intimidating, but it usually means you’re challenging yourself and learning something new. Discomfort is crucial to the training process!
Communicate with your manager.
Even if you have a good idea of what your role entails, it can be beneficial to align with your manager on goals and expectations upfront. How do they envision your role in the context of the team? How do they evaluate success? Are there specific aspects you should focus more of your energy on? At Fisher, employees work with their managers to outline their goals at the start of each year, and regular goal check-ins help keep them on track. These check-ins are a great opportunity to go over your accomplishments, discuss where you currently stand in your role, and get feedback on areas for improvement. On the flip side, they are also a chance to let your manager know what you need from them.
Ask questions.
Don’t be afraid to speak up when you’re struggling to grasp a new concept or want some additional context. Asking questions helps you gain a deeper understanding of your role, and it’s very possible that your question brings something new to your trainer’s attention. Contrary to what many people fear, asking questions typically isn’t disruptive or tedious to the person training you—in fact, it’s often the opposite. Seeking additional information indicates that you’re interested and dedicated to learning your new role, and it shows that you are actively listening in your training sessions.
To encourage an open environment, many departments at Fisher Investments host coffee chats or office hours, where new employees can bring their questions to their leadership. These sessions can help managers get to know employees of all levels and understand where there may be gaps in training or resources.
Seek out mentorship.
At Fisher Investments, mentorship is central to our training process across all departments. Many groups assign new teammates a mentor who will help train you for the first several weeks to months, depending on the role. In addition to your assigned mentor, there are many opportunities to build connections with individuals across a range of experiences at Fisher. Whether it’s your manager, a tenured teammate, or even someone outside of your team, a good mentor can help broaden your perspective and skillset.
Be kind to yourself.
No one is perfect. You will inevitably forget something or make an error at some point, so just remember: Every mistake is an opportunity to grow. Take ownership and learn from these moments, focusing on what you can do to improve going forward. You may receive constructive feedback from your manager or mentor, and it’s important to give yourself some grace. You are taking in a lot of information and learning new skills, and it is okay to make mistakes. A large part of our professional development philosophy at Fisher is learning through iteration, using both successes and failures as opportunities to grow. Everyone was new to their job at some point, and they understand that mistakes are a necessary step towards success.
Starting a new role can be a test of your skills and your mental fortitude. However, with the right mindset, concerns turn into confidence, and practice becomes progress. Before you know it, you may look back at your early days in the job and realize that the challenges you faced didn’t hold you back—they pushed you forward.
